In Virginia, alcohol use is on the rise due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Risky alcohol use is classically considered hard to address- but we can help. The Ambulatory Care Outcomes Research Network (ACORN) will assist with integration of screening, counseling, and referrals into your clinical workflow.
Why is this important to your patients?
Unhealthy Alcohol use is the United States’ third-leading cause of preventable death, however- only 13% of primary care clinicians screen their patients using a standard tool and only 6.7% of primary care patients with alcohol use disorders receive treatment.
How can your practice start talking to patients about alcohol use and ensure that you have a plan for follow up?
Enroll in a FREE alcohol initiative through ACORN that will support your practice develop a workflow, learn about brief counseling (<5 minutes) to help patients with risky alcohol use, and develop a local referral base to help patients that need more.
Who is eligible to apply and what are the benefits?
Any primary care practice practice is eligible if you see patients over 18 years old (obstetrics/gynecology are encouraged, too!) You’ll participate in 3-7 meetings, depending on practice size, and work through integrating this process. We offer 20 Maintenance of Certification Part IV credits and 20 CME credits (AAFP and AMA PRA1).
